Eternal life really is a free Gift

Eternal life is a free gift for you from God. It really is a free gift! This gift is priceless. It cost God dearly to purchase this gift! It is a gift that only God can buy and he wants you to have it. He really does love you and wants you to have this gift!

all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. – Romans 3:23-25

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

Do you believe it?

Eternal life cannot be earned

Religion cannot save. Good works, attending church, fasting, tithing, trying to live a good life etc… cannot save. We are all guilty in God’s sight because we have all sinned. Jesus said that even if you hate someone in your heart it’s the same as murder, and whoever looks at a woman to lust for her commits adultery.

And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness Romans 4:5

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. – Ephesians 2:8:9

Why the cross?

Because of our evil deeds (sins) we are enemies of God. God is holy and righteous and he cannot just overlook sin. No, God in His infinite holiness must punish sin. The wages of sin is death, not just physical death, but spiritual death also known as the second death. But God is love. So, how can God’s righteousness and holiness and justice be satisfied but yet love man and save him. Behold, the work of the cross. On the cross, the penalty for sin was paid for by God Himself. God gave His Son. The Son of God laid down His life and paid the ransom for us. Jesus never sinned and died for His enemies! In effect, Jesus paid the debt that we owe for our sins.

But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us! Romans 5:8

Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures 1 Corinthians 15:3-4

And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him Colossians 1:21-22

But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. Hebrews 9:26-28

A word about repentance

As we have seen, eternal life (salvation) is a free gift purchased by God. You cannot earn it in any way. No one can add to the perfect work and sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. It would be an insult to God to try and add to the work of God. Repentance from sin will not get you into heaven or make you right with God. Repentance is a fruit of salvation. Repentance is a fruit of faith. Knowing what it cost God to save us, the Son of God on a cross, beaten, insulted, scourged for our sake… this should lead us to repentance of course. We will hate the sin we once loved. It was our sin that killed Jesus!

Knowing what it cost God to save us will lead us to thank God more and result in more glory for God. He is so worthy, so great, so wonderful. Will you believe in what God has done for you? Will you receive the free gift of eternal life? Salvation from the punishment for your sins? Peace with God?

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
